IMPROVING CARBON BALANCES IN SLOVENIA AND SERBIA

The aim of this collaborative project with the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia (KIS) and the Institute of Fruit and Vegetable Crops Serbia (IFVC) is to improve the humus balance and carbon storage capacity of soil. The project came about as a result of a study that showed a humus loss of 0.5% in arable soils in the north of Serbia over the last 30 years. Methods for boosting humus formation are demonstrated on farms. These methods include growing clover, lucerne, grain legumes, catch crops and undersown crops, and establishing agroforestry systems. This knowledge is shared during field days, seminars and excursions, and through videos.
