Welcome to Naturland

Naturland farmers and processors have been ground-breaking global pioneers for over 30 years. The world’s first ever conversion to organic agriculture of tea gardens in Sri Lanka and India in the 1980s was the prelude to our successful work on an international scale. Currently 65,000 farmers in 58 countries manage an area of some 440,000 hectares according to the Naturland standards. To Naturland, organic agriculture means combining tradition with modern practices and experience with the courage to adopt new approaches.

Organic knowledge transfer

On August 21st, 2019, and for the second year in a row, Naturland was thrilled to welcome a dynamic and highly diverse group of farmers, students of various agricultural master programs, lecturers, government officials from Cameroon, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Mali, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Togo, Zambia and Tunisia in the context of the Green Innovation Centers programme to its headquarters in Gräfelfing.

The group of 25 international postgraduate students participated in a half-day seminar at Naturland in the context of the course „Food chains in agriculture” at the University of Applied sciences Weihenstephan-Triesdorf.

Naturland supporting coffee farmers in Uganda and Burundi in coping with climate change

Small farmers around the world are already suffering to a large extent from the effects of climate change. Even though organic farmers are often better equipped, especially since cultivation in agroforestry systems can buffer climate extremes to a certain degree, there are as well challenges to be coped with.

In the last months Naturland staff Manfred Fürst and Anne Hessenland were active in Uganda as well as Burundi in carrying out workshops to support coffee cooperatives in how to deal with the challenges of climate change that are already perceptible and are still to come.

Naturland adopts the first organic standards to have been passed in the EU on insects and the use of insect protein as a sustainable source of protein

insects 250Insects are seen as a major source of protein for the future. They are not only rich in nutrients but their production can also be sustainable and environmentally friendly. It was with this in mind that the assembly of delegates of this organic association, which was held in May, unanimously adopted the new Naturland standards on organic insect breeding.

The FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, therefore considers that insects will make an increasingly important contribution to feeding the growing world population. Besides being bred for human consumption, insects can also be used as an important ingredient of sustainably produced animal fodder.
