Naturland

BF15 Titel englGräfelfing/Nuremberg – “Naturland – mover and shaker. At home and abroad.” This was the Naturland slogan at the BioFach 2015 in Nuremberg. It makes a clear statement about the role Naturland is playing as a force for innovation in the organic industry. Whatever the area, from the certification of the first organic coffee co-operative, to the development of organic aquaculture and the establishment of links between organic and fair trade in the north and south: Naturland is a trail-blazing pioneer, inspiring others to push their own innovative boundaries.

At the joint Naturland booth in pavilion 6, close to 60 German and international partners and guests exemplified how Naturland continues to move and shake the organic sector. A good further 100 Naturland partners were also exhibiting in other trade fair pavilions. A total of 15 of the partners participated on the joint stand are certified to the Naturland fair standards, “Naturland Fair”. The successful development of the “Naturland Fair” concept is an example of the Naturland continuing concept of innovation.

New “Naturland Fair” partners – GEPA and LaSelva celebrated important anniversaries
Paying fair prices is the only way to persuade more farmers to go organic. Certification to “Naturland Fair” standards, which commenced in 2010, was the first time that organic and fair trade adopted a joint logo linking the north and south. Today, 40% of the Naturland farmers abroad and as many as 60% of their German colleagues supply their produce partially or wholly to organisations certified to fair trade standards. There are over 650 items produced by 33 partner companies of Naturland which today display the “Naturland Fair” logo.

Two “Naturland Fair” partners who exemplify the diversity of this logo’s application were exhibiting at the joint BioFach booth for the first time. Canaan Fair Trade (olive oil, fine foods) guarantees a stable income for over 1,700 smallholders in Palestine. The “soziale Milchwirtschaft“ dairy belonging to Lobetaler Bio-Molkerei is, in turn, a branch of Hoffnungstaler Werkstätten which is also certified to the “Naturland Fair“ standards and which provides proper jobs for disabled people in Brandenburg.

Another cause for celebration was the anniversaries celebrated by two companies which have been Naturland partners from the early days: gepa Fair Trade Company has been synonymous with fair trade for 40 years now, 28 of which have been in close co-operation with Naturland. For 35 years so far, Karl Egger, co-founder of Naturland, has been practising organic agriculture on his LaSelva estate in Tuscany where he produces organic fine foods.

“Naturland Fish and Seafood” Forum
The diversity of rigorously organic Naturland aquaculture produce and sustainable fishing (“Naturland Wildfish”) available to the specialist trade today was at the focus of the new “Naturland Fish and Seafood” Forum. It was also a source of information about the specific projects behind these products. One example is a Naturland farm, the organic algae of which, obtained from the Atlantic, is distributed by Arche Naturprodukte, among others.

Mouth-watering creations produced by Naturland and top organic chef Konrad Geiger
A popular meeting place in the midst of hectic trade fair activity was again the Naturland FairWöhnBar which offered various savoury snacks, and cakes, besides its organic and free trade coffee specialities. Even those with healthy appetites could eat their fill here. Konrad Geiger, a top organic chef (Bio Kontor7) was providing a comprehensive gastronomic array of gourmet dishes at the Naturland booth: there were treats in store for everyone, ranging from the traditional and hearty marinated beef dish, “rheinischer Sauerbraten”, to a vegan risotto made from a recent prize-winner, an ancient grain, “Bayerischer Reis“, grown by Chiemgaukorn, a Naturland farm.

Naturland was again participating in a series of events listed in the trade fair congress programme and also held on the stages at the joint Naturland booth. One event was again a particular highlight, the traditional booth party “Blue Night“, on the Thursday evening (12th February, as of 6.15 p.m.).
